W.D.Amaradewa

W.D.Amaradewa was a prominent Sri Lankan singer, composer, and violinist. Though many of his fans know him as just W.D.Amaradewa, his real name is Sri Lankabimana Vanakuvattage Don Albert Perera. He was born in 1927 on December 5th in Moratuwa. Due to the contribution to the local music development, W.D.Amaradewa cited as the Mastro of Sri Lankan Music. Pandith Amaradewa was good at playing Sri Lankan traditional musical instruments such as tablas, sitars and harmoniums. Pandith Amaradewa completed his primary education in Moratuwa Maha Vidyalaya and Sri Sumangala College. However, he completed his higher studies in Kaluthara Vidyalaya in Kaluthara. After finishing the advanced level examination, he started learning Sri Lankan folk music and joined as an artist to the Radio Ceylon. He then entered Bhathhande Music Institute in 1955 and was able to win all the violin competitions.

During the 1950s, Amaradewa started the ''Janagayana Project'' and was able to create a uniquely local music style that stayed well in the folk tradition. During his life, he has received numerous awards from locally and internationally. Pandith Amaradewa received a Philippine ''Ramon Magsaysay Award'' in 2001, and in 2002, he received the Indian ''Padma Sri'' award.

  • ''Padma Sri''  from India in 2002
  • ''Ramon Magsaysay Award'' in 2001 from Philippine


Apart from above, Pandith Amaradewa composed the music for the ''Gaumii Salaam'' Maldives National Anthem. After over 50 years of invaluable service to the music of his motherland, Pandith Amaradewa passed away in 2016 on November 3rd.
