Vijaya Kumarathunga

Vijaya Kumarathunga was the most famous Sri Lankan film industry actor in the 1980s. He was born in 1945 on October 9th in Ja-Ela. He was not only an actor, but he was also a great politician and a talented singer. Unfortunately, he was shot by a political enemy and died on the spot in front of his house, Polhengoda in 1988 February 16th. Vijaya Kumarathunga completed his primary education in St. Benedict's College and then moved to Mazenod College for the higher studies. In 1978, Vijaya Kumarathunga was married to the former Sri Lankan President Chandrika Bandaranayaka Kumarathunga. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

During 1985 Vijaya Kumarathunga was active in politics and formed a seperate political party as ''Sri Lanka Mahajana Party''. Vijaya Kumarathunga started his journey in the Sinhala Cinema with '' Hanthane Kathawa'' in 1969 directed by Sugathapala Senerath Yapa. In his first movie, he was lucky enough to act the main role.

From 1969 to 1988, Vijaya Kumarathunga has acted over 120 Sinhala movies. Some of his most famous movies are ''Gaga Addara'' released in 1980, ''Badde Gedara'' released in 1980, '' Paradige'', ''Maha Gedara'', ''Kadapathaka Chaya'' and ''Kristhu Charithaya''. Vijaya Kumarathunga has also acted in one English movie, The God King in 1984.


Vijaya Kumarathunga entered the politics through ''Lanka Sama Samaja Party'' and then joined ''SLFP''. During his political activities, Vijaya had many threatens from the United National Party members, eventually, he was shot in the head by Lionel Ranasinghe in 1988 February 16th. His funeral was held on 21st February 1988 and it was the most crowded funeral ceremony in Sri Lankan history so far. This was the first funeral ceremony which broadcasted live on Sri Lanka by Rupavahini Corporation. Below are all the movies Vijaya Kumarathunga acted in his life time.
