Sangeetha Weerarathna

Sangeetha Weerarathna is an award-winning Sri Lankan stage and film actress as well as a popular television presenter. Currently, she is more famous for directing and producing Sri Lankan movies. She was born in 1963 on December 13th. Her full name is Dian Hemamali Sangeetha Weerarathna. She started her carrier with 'It a Matter of Time opposite' movie which was directed by late file director Roy De Silva. At that time she was in grade 9 and just 16 years old. 


Sangeetha Weerarathna completed her ordinary level education in St. John's College Panadura. However, she completed her advanced level examination at Methodist College, Colombo. Sangeetha's father was a renowned cinematographer in Sri Lankan cinema, Thimothy Weerarathna, however, her mother was not involved in the cinema industry. Before entering to the Sinhala film industry, Tony Ranasinghe was an English stenographer. 

After completing her higher education in she moved to India for further studies. She was graduated in India, Delhi University. After returning to the home country she studied at Colombo Academy of Language Skills and Dramatic Art (CALSDA). However, in 1991, she entered into the Sri Lankan film industry and was able to achieve two major awards from the Sarasaviya Film festival as Sarasaviya Best Actress Award and Sarasaviya Most popular Actress Award. Sangeetha was crowned as the Most Popular Actress in Sarasaviya Film Festival for three consecutive years in 2001, 2002, and 2003.
The Best Actress Award of Sarasaviya was granted for the brilliant performance showed in the movie of 'Aswasuma' which was directed by Benet Rathnayaka in 2001. In Aswasuma she did the wife's role of Jackson Anthony (Guneri).

 

Nayanthara Weerarathna who is Sangeetha's elder sister is currently living in Australia. Nayanathara was not interested in the film industry and did not appear even in a single time on the silver screen. In 2002, Sangeetha Weerarathna married Roshan Kariyapperuma who is a popular businessman in Sri Lanka. Roshan Kariyapperuma is the chairman of the largest Media Network in Sri Lanka, which is 'Voice of Asia Network (PVT) Ltd. Porshia Kariyapperuma is the only daughter of Sangeetha and Roshan. She is currently studying in Colombo Musius College, however, she completed her primary education in Colombo Buddhist Ladies College.  


The majority of Sangeetha's role involve dramatic characters, however, she has acted in few blockbuster comedy films such as Sapata Dukata Sani, Ra Daniyel Dawal Migel, Parliament Jokes, etc. Sangeetha also presented several television programs. One of her most famous television programs was 'Gedara Dora' which was telecasted on Rupavahini every Tuesdays at 9.00 pm.

Malani Fonseka was born in 1947 on April 30th. She is the most popular Sri Lankan film actress in the Sinhala Cinema. Though she is popular as Malani Fonseka, many of her fans are unaware of her full name. Her full name is Wanniarachchige Malini Senehelatha Fonseka. She was born in Kelaniya, Pethiyagoda close to the Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya. Malani was a former parliament member of Sri Lanka. Due to her over 40 years of experience in the Sinhalese film industry, she is known as the Queen of the Sinhalese Cinema. Her carrier began with the ''Punchi Baba film which was released in 1968, produced by Tissa Liyanasooriya.

 

Malani won her first award in 1968 from the National State Festival for the ''Best Actress Award'' and then she was able to win the ''Sarasaviya Best Actress Award'' in 1980 for the ''Higana Kolla'' film. Malani also won the ''Best Actress Award'' for the ''Aradana'' and ''Yasa Isuru'' films in 1982 and 1983 accordingly. Due to her brilliant acting skills, she was named by CNN as one of Asia's twenty-five greatest cinema actors of all time.

 

Malani Fonseka's father was Gilbert Fonseka and mother was Seelawathi Fonseka. Gilbert Fonseka was a cleark of the Government Press and Seelawathi Fonseka was a housewife. They had thirteen children and Malani was the third child. Malani studied in St. John's College in Nugegoda until the fifth grade and then moved to Gurukula Vidyalaya in Kelaniya as her family moved nearby to that college. Malani entered to the acting field through stage dramas in 1963, her first stage drama was '' Norata Rata''. Her most famous and popular stage drama was '' Akal Vessa'' and she was able to win the National Award for ''Best Stage Drama Actress for that. Malani's elder brother who was not interested in the film industry was died in 2012 due to a sudden stroke. However, her one of Sister Damayanthi Fonseka was acted in several Sinhala teledramas and Sinhala movies but did not able to achieve what Malani achieved in the field. After the end of 30 years civil war, in 2010 Malani Fonseka was appointed to the Sri Lanka Parliament from the National List candidate on behalf of the United People's Freedom Alliance.
