Joe Abewickrama

Joe Abewickrama was an award-winning Sinhala cinema finest character actor since 1955 to 2011. Initially, he started his carrier with comedy roles, however, he has done several dramatic roles. Joe Abewickrama was born in 1927 on June 22nd in Rathnapura district center of Palmadulla, Lellopitiya. Though he was well famous as just Joe Abewickrama, his full name was Deshabandu Gammana Patabedige Don John Joe Abewickrama. 

In 1999, he won the Silver Screen Award from Singapore International Film Festival as the Best Asian Actor for the ''Pura hada Kaluwara'' Sinhala Movie. There he was playing the main character of  grieving father. The meaning of the '' Pura hada Kaluwara'' is Darkness of the full moon day. Joe Abewickrama was the first Sri Lankan film star who participate in the Filmfare Film Festival in India in 1966. Due to his excellent acting skills, Joe Abewickrama considered being the second king of Sri Lankan Cinema, after the Gamini Fonseka. 

 

Joe Abewickrama completed his primary education in St. Aloysius College in Rathnapura, Pallmadulla and then moved to Ceewali College in the same city for the higher studies. Joe Abewickrama's first cinema was released in 1955 - ''Dewasundari''. After finishing the higher studies Joe Abewickrama moved to Colombo and worked as a studio manager at Wimalaweera's studio in Nawajeevana. While working as a studio manager Joe Abewickrama was manage to build contacts with Sinhala film industry actors and directors. Joe Abewickrama first notable role was in 1957 in ''Saradama'' Sinhala movie, due to his brilliant acting skills Joe became the most wanted comedy film star in the 1960s in the Sinhala film industry. Until he passed away in 2011, he has acted over one hundred and fifty movies.
