Gamini Fonseka

Gamini Fonseka was the giant actor in the Sri Lankan film industry from 1960 to 1998. He was also a talented film director and a politician. Joe Abewickrama, Tony Ranasingha, Malini Fonseka and Gamini Fonseka are the most famous four film stars ever born in Sri Lanka. Gamini Fonseka was born in 1936 March 21st in Dehiwala, Colombo District. Gamini Fonseka completed his primary education at Presbyterian Institution and then joined St. Thomas College in Mount Lavania. During his school life he was an active member of school drama club and performed several stage shows. 

When schooling, Gamini Fonseka played for school cricket team as an opening batsman and was a active member of St. Thomas Swimmimg club. In the year 1962 Gamini was married Fonseka was married to Dorthy Margarat and settled in Dehiwala. 

The couple had four children and one of his son Damith Fonseka also entered to the Sinhala film industry in 1990s. According to the newspaper interview in 1992, Gamini Fonseka stated that innitially he wanted to become as a cinema cameraman. Gamini Fonseka started his carrier with the famous film of Dr. Lester james Peiris ''Rekawa''. However, his first main role was appeared in 1959 from the ''Daiya Yogaya'' and then in 1960 he appeared in the movie of Dr. Lester James Pieris ''Sandeshaya''. 

Gamini also did some anti-hero roles in few Sinhala movies including ''Horungeth Horu''. The first movie which Gamini Fonseka directed was ''Parasathu Mal'' and then he directed several movies including ''Sagarayak Mada'', ''Uthumaneni'', Anthima Ra'', ''Nomiyena Minissu'', ''Koti Waligaya'', Sakwithi Suwaya'', ''Raa Manamali'' and ''Maurige Kathawa''. Some of his movies such as ''Nidanaya'', ''Walikathara'' and Nomiyena Minissu'' were won 'Presidential Awards as well. 

In 1990s Gamini entered in to Sinhala teledrama industry and acted in '' Kalu Saha Sudu'' mega teledrama. Gamini Fonseka was not only a film srat and a director, he was a well talented song writer. His most famous songs are ''Babaridu'' for the movie of ''Sarungale which released in 1979. Gamini Fonseka was passed awy in 2004 September 30th at a private hospital in Colombo at the age of 68.  Below are some of his movies:
