Aruna Ranathunga is a former Sri Lankan cricket team captain. He was the 1996 Cricket World Cup-winning captain for Sri Lanka. Arjuna Ranathunga was the person who lifts Sri Lankan cricket from underdog status to one of great forces in global cricketing. His father was Reggie Padmasana Ranathunga, who was the 3rd Governor of Sabaragamuwa Province from 2005 to 2008.

 

Arjuna was born in 1963 on December 01st and currently 57 years old. Arjuna has five siblings and only Sanjeewa Ranathunga was involved in Sri Lanka cricket along with Arjuna. Other 04 brothers are Nishantha Ranathunga (a businessman), Dhammika Ranathunga (owning a restaurant in Colombo), Ruwan Ranathunga (working with the media), and Prasanna Ranathunga (involve in Sri Lanka politics).

 

Arjuna Ranathunga's son, Dayan Ranatunga also involves in cricket and has completed his education in Colombo D.S. Senanayaka College. He was the opening batsman in the D.S.Senanayaka school cricket team.

Arjuna Ranathunga is a left-handed batsman and right-armed medium bowler. Arjuna entered into Sri Lanka National team in 1982 and played till 2001. His first test match was with England in 1982 and the last test match was with South Africa in 2000. His first one-day international match was also with England in 1982 and the last one-day international match was with Kenya in 1999. From 1982 to 2001, he has played 93 test matches and 269 one day international matches.

 

Arjuna Ranathunga has scored a total of 5,105 runs from all 93 test matches and 7,456 runs from one-day international matches. 

He has achieved 4 centuries and 38 half-centuries in test matches. However, fro  269 one-day international matches, he has achieved 4 centuries and 49 half-centuries. Arjuna Ranathunga's best score was 135 in test matches and 131 in one-day international matches. He has taken 16 wickets in test matches and 79 wickets in one-day international matches.   

 

According to many cricket commentators, Arjuna Ranathunga was the greatest captain in international cricket history. He became the Sri Lankan national cricket team captain in 1988 to 1999. During this time he led the cricket team to win the 1996 World Cup. Arjuna Ranathunga's innovative captaincy and the strategies caused for this victory. He was the person who introduces the strategy of scoring as many runs as possible with in the first fifteen overs, Arjuna used the advantage of field restrictions within these fifteen overs. 

 

Arjuna Ranathunga's last cricket match was in 2000 and it was Sri Lanka's 100th Test match. Thereafter, he retired from cricket in 2001 and entered into Sri Lanka politics in the same year. he contested for the 2001 parliament election under the Sri Lanka Freedom Party fro Colombo District. However, in 2004, Arjuna was appointed as Deputy Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Promotion. In 2010, Arjuna supported Sarath Fonseka and joined the Democratic Party. In the 2015 presidential election, Arjuna Ranathunga supported Maithreepala Sirisena and after the victory, he was appointed as Minister of Highways, Ports, and Shipping.
